Oneofthemostperplexingquestionsinstemcellbiologyis“Whatmakesastemcellastemcell?”Researchersstudyingadultstemcellswouldliketoknowwhatdistinguishesastemcell,whichcanreplenishitselfindefinitely,fromaprogenitorcell,whichcanproliferateonlyalimitednumberoftimes.Now,researchersareonestepclosertounderstandingthedifference.

PreviousstudiesbyMorrisonandMichigancolleagueMichaelF.ClarkeshowedthattheBmi-1geneisneededtomaintainstemcellsfromtheblood.Thenewstudy,reportedinNature,showsthatthegeneisalsorequiredbynervestemcellsfromthebrainandgut.Thenewstudyfurthershowsthatthegeneaffectstheprocessofproliferation,buthasnoeffectonhowlongacellsurvives.

Interestingly,manycancercellsalsooverexpressthegene.Becausethegenemakescellsimmortal,itmayplayakeyroleincancerdevelopment.ResearchersstudyingbothcancerandstemcellsarekeenonfiguringoutwhichgenesareregulatedbyBmi-1.
