Researcherswouldliketoidentifythegenesthatdistinguishstemcellsfromprogenitorcellsbecausethetwoareoftenconfused.Stemcellsaremoredifficulttoisolatebecausetherearefarfeweroftheminthebody,buttheyareconsideredmoreusefulbecausetheyproliferateincultureandcanreplacemostofthecelltypesofagiventissue. u# x4 V$ X4 D$ H- Z! x( t
PreviousstudiesbyMorrisonandMichigancolleagueMichaelF.ClarkeshowedthattheBmi-1geneisneededtomaintainstemcellsfromtheblood.Thenewstudy,reportedinNature,showsthatthegeneisalsorequiredbynervestemcellsfromthebrainandgut.Thenewstudyfurthershowsthatthegeneaffectstheprocessofproliferation,buthasnoeffectonhowlongacellsurvives.

Interestingly,manycancercellsalsooverexpressthegene.Becausethegenemakescellsimmortal,itmayplayakeyroleincancerdevelopment.ResearchersstudyingbothcancerandstemcellsarekeenonfiguringoutwhichgenesareregulatedbyBmi-1.
