D( C' M" GUniversityofMinnesotaresearchersshowthatadultbonemarrowstemcellscanbeinducedtodifferentiateintocellsofthemidbrain.Thefindings,publishedintheonlineearlyeditionoftheProceedingsoftheNationalAcademyofSciences,suggestthatadultbone-marrow-derivedstemcellsmayonedaybeusefulfortreatingdiseasesofthecentralnervoussystem,includingParkinson'sdisease.; q4 D9 O$ Z# G" O) w
Thepotentialoftheseadultstemcells,termedmultipotentadultprogenitorcells(MAPCs),werethesubjectofresearchreportedinNatureinJune2002.Today'spublishedresearchfindingsshowspecificcelldifferentiationforaspecificgoal.Whilethistypeofcelldifferentiationhasbeenshowntooccurfromembryonicandneuralstemcells,thisisthefirsttimeadultbone-marrow-derivedcellshavebeenshowntogeneratedopaminelikeneurons.( I! We'reabletoshowinvitrogenerationoffunctionaldopamineproducingcellsfromadultbonemarrowstemcellsneededfortherapyofParkinson's,saidleadinvestigatorCatherineVerfaillie,M.D.,directoroftheuniversity'sStemCellInstitute.ThisfurtherprovessimilarityoftheMAPCswithembryonicstemcells.( G, }( e; S' ~0 ~( q  B+ ]! Again,whileadultstemcellsholdgreatpromise,sidebysidecomparisonofadultandembryonicstemcellsmustbedonetodeterminewhichstemcellsaremostusefulintreatingaparticulardisease,saidVerfaillie.
