Morethan100ofthehybrids,madebyfusinghumanskincellswithrabbiteggs,wereallowedtodevelopinlaboratorydishesforseveraldaysbeforethescientistsdestroyedthemtoretrieveso-calledembryonicstemcellsfromtheirinteriors.AlthoughscientistsinMassachusettshadpreviouslymixedhumancellsandcoweggsinasimilarattempttomakehybridembryosasasourceofstemcells,thoseexperimentswerenotsuccessful.

Becausehumaneggcellsaredifficultandcostlytoretrievefromwomen'sovaries--andbecausehumaneggretrievalposesriskstothedonors--scientistshavebeenwantingtoknowwhetheranimaleggsmayserveaswell.AmajorquestionhasbeenwhethertheremnantsofmitochondrialDNAthattypicallyremaininananimaleggwouldbecompatiblewiththenuclearDNAcontributedbythehumancell.
