We'vemadesomethingthatsharesseveralimportantpropertieswiththebetacells,butwehavenotmadebetacells,saidIngridC.Rulifson,afirstauthorofthestudy.Webelievethisisthefurthestanyonehasgone(inmakinginsulin-producingcellsfromembryonicstemcells).Thefactthatwewereabletoachieverescuesurvivalinthesemicehasn'tbeendemonstratedbeforeinthisway.

+ }+ K/ R; M. kTheresearchersthenusedchemicalstokillthebetacellsinagroupoflaboratorymice,turningthemiceintodiabetics.Thescientiststhengraftedsomeoftheinsulin-producingtissueintotheanimals.Thetransplantedtissuemadeinsulin,respondingtothelevelsofsugarinthebloodstreamofthemice,andkeptthemicealive.$ d% M" p1 }  t; B) c
Controlmice,whichhaddiabetesbutdidnotreceivethegraft,died.

Atleastforashortperiod,weextendedthelifeoftheseanimalsconvincinglyandshowedthatuponremovalofthegrafttheanimalssufferedsevererelapseofthedisease,saidSeungK.Kim,aStanfordresearcherandseniorauthorofthestudy.
