/ G1 T2 }% `. O1 g9 w- tThe main difference between this and the first edition is the addition of a final chapter on the use of1 i% K5 N! x0 z( d- i3 M
molecular data for the construction of phylogenetic trees. I have done this in response to suggestions, S3 _. K* u8 s5 v6 R" ?. B
from teachers who have used the book as a course text. There are, of course, several excellent computer1 w; Y% J6 r U- v. C, f/ X
packages into which one can, more or less mindlessly, plug one's molecular data, and recover a tree with v" r8 ]3 a* F* P3 g. ?) ^5 p
mysterious `bootstrap values' attached to it. I think it is important, therefore, that biologists should* A) U/ ]5 Q& c; p; f1 m
understand the logic underlying these packages, and this I have tried to explain. But I do urge them to
5 ^- {# f+ y t$ ?0 [% Kremember that molecular data can be used to answer questions about the mechanisms of evolution, as* o' d; @( f$ ~ i# H- F
well as about phylogeny.
, \/ J/ L( `; ZI have also taken the opportunity to rewrite some sections that students have found confusing. The two, a" A3 q5 J0 }! @
chapters that seem to have caused most difficulty are those on the evolution of sex, and on evolutionary. }! X& Z- l/ e0 W, b7 x: l4 k
game theory. It is ironic that these are the topics on which I have concentrated my own research: perhaps
) I# a; d3 X' m( o" W* C7 vI am too close to them to see the difficulties. In any case, I have rewritten both chapters, and hope that8 ?, i/ u( H+ C- L+ J: y' U/ X- `
they are now easier to follow.
+ q% O6 w' U+ ^7 Z# N X7 aIn general, the discussion of current areas of research in the first edition has stood the test of time rather3 G# i3 Y4 C. b; U. _
well. I have expanded some sections, in particular those on the evolution of prokaryotes, and on
6 S1 L- d6 L6 e, q, N) oparasitism and mutualism. Finally, I have corrected a few errors that crept into the first edition, for which
