The field of genetics continues to advance at an astounding pace, marked

analyzed in remarkable detail. Expressed sequence tags are being2 k s1 i# k, v$ [ d8 A
used for the detection of new genes and for genome annotation. DNA% y7 Q7 {- L$ @' N, _! T1 S' t/ y
microarray technology has taken the study of gene expression and genetic: G; @* @. M5 A. |# v0 p4 W
variation to a global, genome-wide scale. Hundreds of new genes and microbial

of entire communities of microorganisms collected in environmental samples.

RNA, and RNA interference has become an effective tool for creating loss

recede from use or require revision. All this is reflected in the8 T- |" T" y0 ~- Z" U+ n
changing content of A Dictionary of Genetics, from the publication of its; z4 [. b& B# H4 {* J
first edition to this seventh edition, 37 years later. This new edition has
6 ]7 C0 c' ~! V% L) u6 K( f Sundergone an extensive overhaul, involving one or more changes (additions,7 [& ^7 v7 q! z: A' r
deletions, or modifications of entries) on 95% of the pages of the$ p' U4 U) ~1 m: h' ^# J- c
previous one. The seventh edition contains nearly 7,000 definitions, of8 o9 b1 E' q$ \* D7 q. I1 G% I
which 20% are revised or new, and nearly 1,100 Chronology entries, of2 f# o# y4 \0 n! i: `2 l
which 30% are revised or new. Three hundred of the definitions are accompanied8 y' r2 S, Z' _2 i4 m- C5 Y8 S
by illustrations or tables, and 16 of these are new. In addition,, V# ^1 y, Q3 Z9 j; x6 T& P
dozens of recent research papers, books, periodicals, and internet sites of

The year 2006 marks the 100th anniversary of the introduction of the4 ]; h3 q2 U# Q' R' t/ g
term genetics by the British biologist William Bateson. In this seventh edition6 E- o3 q2 J( R0 q& e3 N
of A Dictionary of Genetics, the term genetics itself has been updated,) Q6 i3 b Y1 k. c% I
reflecting progress in understanding and technique over the years, and necessitated
- S* u& w+ y' L% w1 o: _by the convergence of classical and molecular genetics. Genetics5 z+ |& o& @7 k- b; A, L% O' T. n' w
today is no longer simply the study of heredity in the old sense, i.e., the
