Dr.OwenWitte,arenownedscientistwhoselaboratoryresearchlaidthegroundworkfordevelopmentofthetargetedleukemiatherapyGleevec,isdirectorofthenewinstitute.Healsostressedtheinterdisciplinaryapproachnecessarytofacethechallengesrelatedtostemcellresearch.Embryonicstemcellshavethepowertodevelopintoeverytypeofhumantissue,saidWitte,whoalsoisaprofessorofmicrobiology,immunologyandmoleculargenetics,andaHowardHughesMedicalInstituteinvestigator.Ifwecanlearnhowtheyareregulatedforgrowthanddevelopment,wecanharnessthisknowledgetostudytissuedevelopmentandregenerationandpotentiallycomeupwithnewwaystofightmanylife-threateningdiseases.& J/ U. \+ F" ~! ResearchersarehopefulthatstemcellresearchwillleadtorevolutionarynewtreatmentsforParkinson’s,spinalcordinjuries,Alzheimer’s,cancerandotherdiseases,andperhapsshednewlightonhowsomediseasesdevelop.However,mostscientistsagreethathumantreatmentsareyearsorevendecadesaway.
: v9 Z- x) A9 Z' q# b" G7 {Proposition71,passedby59percentofCaliforniavotersinNovember,willprovide$3billionforstemcellresearch.AstateinstituteisbeingcreatedinNorthernCaliforniatoallocatefundingtostemcellscientistsatuniversities,medicalschoolsandresearchfacilities.GrantapplicationswillbeavailableinMay.A29-memberoversightandgoverningboardwilloverseetheinstituteandreviewrequestsforfunding.6 d* I1 g, Y! Withthelaunchofthisinstitute,werealizeourgoalofbringingtogetherscientific,ethical,legalandpolicyexpertsfromacrosstheUCLAcampustofocusonthegreatpromiseofstemcellresearch,saidDr.GeraldS.Levey,vicechancellorformedicalsciencesanddeanoftheDavidGeffenSchoolofMedicine.Asdean,Iamcommittedtoadvancingthefullpotentialofstemcellresearchtofindnovelandmoreeffectivetherapiestotreatmanydiseasesforwhichpresent-daytherapyiseitherunsatisfactoryorunavailable.4 T! BecausetheuniversityandmedicalschoolatUCLAarelocatedonthesamecampus,researchersarewellpositionedtocompeteforstemcellgrantfunding,Wittesaid.UCLAresearchershaveproventheirskillatusheringscientificdiscoveriesfromthelabtomodernmedicine.SeveraltargetedtherapiesweredevelopedbasedonUCLAresearch,includingGleevecandthebreastcancerdrugHerceptin.Additionally,UCLAscientistsplayedkeyrolesintestingthetargetedtherapiesAvastinandTarceva.

5 {+ T& Q3 W6 L$ T' ?HIV:UCLAscientistsareexploringhowtheAIDSvirusblocksstemcellfunction,aswellasstemcellapproachestocombatingHIVdisease.Onepotentialtherapeuticexampleincludesinsertingantiviralgenesintoblood-formingstemcellsandreintroducingthemintothebody.Asthesebloodcellsdevelop,thegeneprotectsthematurecellagainstHIVinfection.TheUCLAAIDSInstitutealreadyhascompletedaPhaseIclinicaltrialusingadultstemcells.Embryonicstemcellsalsocouldbeengineeredforthisstrategytoavoidtheneedforisolatingpatients’cells,easetransplantationandincreaseclinicalusefulness.

N" W5 k1 J$ z( u8 HCancer:Researchwillseektoshedmorelightoncancerstemcellsandhowtheydevelop.Notmuchisknownaboutcancerstemcellsandnewfindingsmayleadtotherapiesthattargetcellsignalingpathwaysspecificforcancerstemcells.Thesetherapieshoneinonwhatisbrokeninacancercellwhileleavingthehealthytissueintact.SeveralJonssonCancerCenterresearchersalreadyaredoingstemcellresearchinlaboratories,andthatworkwillbefoldedintotheinstitute.
