“We think that an embryonic stem cell is able to differentiate because most of the gene enhancers are open—that’s what we expect to see. Think of the promoter as the front door and the enhancer as the back. If we look at differentiated cells, we were surprised to find that, in many cases, when the front door is shut, the back door was still open. We don’t know why that is, but it explains how you can reprogram cells—it’s because the back door is open...The difference between species—for example, between us and monkeys—is probably due to different enhancers and not to different genes. Differences in disease susceptibility among people are probably due to changes in enhancers.”--Peter Jones, PhD, professor of urology and biochemistry and molecular biology at the Keck School.

"Our experiments showed that mice that have progeria, a disorder of premature aging, were healthier and lived longer after an injection of stem cells from young, healthy animals. That tells us that stem cell dysfunction is a cause of the changes we see with aging."--Dr. Niedernhofer, associate professor in Pitt's Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI).

The protocols are poorly documented and not available to the patients. Even in the best-case scenarios, the doctor doesn’t know whether it’s safe or efficacious because of a lack of data.”-Dominique McMahon, a postdoctoral fellow at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health of the University of Toronto.

“If people are trying to spin it as ‘We’re closer to a cure for AMD,’ no, that’s not valid. It’s an advance in terms of basic science ... This is one advance in understanding these cells and it has the potential in the future to help improve transplantation for treatment of AMD.”--Valerie Wallace, associate director of vision research at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.# |4 G6 Z* j4 V4 B' ^6 ]

We need to study them in humans, including human embryos." --Shoukhrat Mitalipov at Oregon National Primate Research Center.

Specifically, it means that remyelination therapies do not need to be based on stem cell transplantation since the stem cells already present in the brain and spinal cord can be made to regenerate myelin, regardless of a person’s age.”--Professor Robin Franklin, director of the MS Society’s Cambridge Centre for Myelin Repair at the University of Cambridge.
