Asoneoftheworld’sleadingresearchuniversities,UCLAhaslongbeenengagedinadultandembryonicstemcellresearchwithactivitiesinareasrangingfromtheAIDSInstitutetotheBrainResearchInstitutetotheUCLACollege,saidUCLAChancellorAlbertCarnesale.ThenewUCLAInstituteforStemCellBiologyandMedicinewillenableustocontinuefosteringsuchinterdisciplinarycollaborationsandtobuildupontheexistingbodyofknowledgeforthebenefitofpeopleworldwide.
7 Y& Y, I0 j3 \/ lUCLAwillprovide$20millionoverfiveyearstolaunchthecampuswideinstitute,whichwillenableteamsofresearcherstocompeteforstategrantscreatedbythepassageofProposition71.Themoneywillpayforrecruitmentforadozennewfacultypositions,salariesandexpansionofhighlysophisticatedlaboratoryspace,infrastructure,andsupplies.
" |- i+ }. x9 n3 s6 NDr.OwenWitte,arenownedscientistwhoselaboratoryresearchlaidthegroundworkfordevelopmentofthetargetedleukemiatherapyGleevec,isdirectorofthenewinstitute.Healsostressedtheinterdisciplinaryapproachnecessarytofacethechallengesrelatedtostemcellresearch.Embryonicstemcellshavethepowertodevelopintoeverytypeofhumantissue,saidWitte,whoalsoisaprofessorofmicrobiology,immunologyandmoleculargenetics,andaHowardHughesMedicalInstituteinvestigator.Ifwecanlearnhowtheyareregulatedforgrowthanddevelopment,wecanharnessthisknowledgetostudytissuedevelopmentandregenerationandpotentiallycomeupwithnewwaystofightmanylife-threateningdiseases.+ I8 \4 H* J0 i9 Q7 n3 c1 c/ t; ~
ResearchersarehopefulthatstemcellresearchwillleadtorevolutionarynewtreatmentsforParkinson’s,spinalcordinjuries,Alzheimer’s,cancerandotherdiseases,andperhapsshednewlightonhowsomediseasesdevelop.However,mostscientistsagreethathumantreatmentsareyearsorevendecadesaway.6 c0 u" e% e# U1 [; R5 F
Proposition71,passedby59percentofCaliforniavotersinNovember,willprovide$3billionforstemcellresearch.AstateinstituteisbeingcreatedinNorthernCaliforniatoallocatefundingtostemcellscientistsatuniversities,medicalschoolsandresearchfacilities.GrantapplicationswillbeavailableinMay.A29-memberoversightandgoverningboardwilloverseetheinstituteandreviewrequestsforfunding.
& w0 f  I% l; wWiththelaunchofthisinstitute,werealizeourgoalofbringingtogetherscientific,ethical,legalandpolicyexpertsfromacrosstheUCLAcampustofocusonthegreatpromiseofstemcellresearch,saidDr.GeraldS.Levey,vicechancellorformedicalsciencesanddeanoftheDavidGeffenSchoolofMedicine.Asdean,Iamcommittedtoadvancingthefullpotentialofstemcellresearchtofindnovelandmoreeffectivetherapiestotreatmanydiseasesforwhichpresent-daytherapyiseitherunsatisfactoryorunavailable.% Z- G, b" e* k
BecausetheuniversityandmedicalschoolatUCLAarelocatedonthesamecampus,researchersarewellpositionedtocompeteforstemcellgrantfunding,Wittesaid.UCLAresearchershaveproventheirskillatusheringscientificdiscoveriesfromthelabtomodernmedicine.SeveraltargetedtherapiesweredevelopedbasedonUCLAresearch,includingGleevecandthebreastcancerdrugHerceptin.Additionally,UCLAscientistsplayedkeyrolesintestingthetargetedtherapiesAvastinandTarceva.: p9 a# @" I4 p& j; r7 k- Y2 c/ y
UCLAalsoistheonlypublicuniversityinCaliforniatoboastasophisticatedGoodManufacturingPractice(GMP)suite,aspecializedlaboratorythatiscriticalforthesafegrowthandmanipulationofstemcelllines.ComplianceofficersoverseeallresearchintheGMPsuite,whichmustfollowstringentfederalguidelinesforreintroductionofmanipulatedcellsintothehumanbody.
1 Y* U! `1 f' j. b" cInaddition,UCLA’sJonssonCancerCenterfeaturesanestablishedclinicaltrialsinfrastructurethatcouldbeusedtotestnewtherapeuticsthatmaydevelopasaresultofthestemcellstudies,saidJudithC.Gasson,cancercenterdirector,stemcellinstituteco-director,andaprofessorofmedicineandbiologicalchemistry.# K. Iseecancerandstemcellsastightlylinked,Gassonsaid.Moreandmoreevidencesuggeststhatcancerisastemcelldisease.Manyofourcurrenttherapiesarenoteffectivebecausetheydon’ttargetthecancerstemcells.OurexperiencewithgenemedicineandtheGMPfacilitieswillmakeiteasierforustotranslateourbasicstemcellresearchintohumantherapiesbyusingfacilitiesandproceduresalreadyinplace.

TheUCLAInstituteforStemCellBiologyandMedicinewillfocusitsembryonicandadultstemcellresearchinthreeareas:
% M' t( S( S! \6 f; @HIV:UCLAscientistsareexploringhowtheAIDSvirusblocksstemcellfunction,aswellasstemcellapproachestocombatingHIVdisease.Onepotentialtherapeuticexampleincludesinsertingantiviralgenesintoblood-formingstemcellsandreintroducingthemintothebody.Asthesebloodcellsdevelop,thegeneprotectsthematurecellagainstHIVinfection.TheUCLAAIDSInstitutealreadyhascompletedaPhaseIclinicaltrialusingadultstemcells.Embryonicstemcellsalsocouldbeengineeredforthisstrategytoavoidtheneedforisolatingpatients’cells,easetransplantationandincreaseclinicalusefulness.
: y7 Q# l( s  q2 @9 X& uCancer:Researchwillseektoshedmorelightoncancerstemcellsandhowtheydevelop.Notmuchisknownaboutcancerstemcellsandnewfindingsmayleadtotherapiesthattargetcellsignalingpathwaysspecificforcancerstemcells.Thesetherapieshoneinonwhatisbrokeninacancercellwhileleavingthehealthytissueintact.SeveralJonssonCancerCenterresearchersalreadyaredoingstemcellresearchinlaboratories,andthatworkwillbefoldedintotheinstitute.
* ]" @) x0 X) gNeurologicaldisorders:UCLAresearchersarestudyingmanyaspectsoftherolesthatstemcellsmayplayinhealingneurologicaldisorders,includingstroke,spinalcordinjury,braintumors,multiplesclerosisandgeneticdiseases.Futurestudieswillincludeinvestigationofstemcellbiologyanddevelopment,aswellastherapeuticbasedresearchusingadultandembryonicstemcells.
) m& h: t% Z1 v3 Z, Q6 q/ wTheInstituteforStemCellBiologyandMedicineisacollaborationoftheDavidGeffenSchoolofMedicine,UCLA’sJonssonCancerCenter,theHenrySamueliSchoolofEngineeringandAppliedScience,andtheUCLACollege.Eachcollaboratorbringsleading-edgetechnologiestothetable:integratedmicrofluidicstoaidincellisolation,microarraysandshapeencodedparticleapproachesforgeneexpressionanalysis,proteomicsusingadvancedmassspectroscopy,large-scalecomputationalfacilitiesforbioinformatics,andworld-classmultimodalityimagingfacilitiesforanalysisofstemcelltherapiesinlaboratorymodelsand,ultimately,inpatientsenrolledinclinicaltrials.3 w2 s. g  g' r/ p' I! k; q& A( E
UCLAencouragesstrongcollaborationsbetweenfacultyinthelifesciencesandthehealthsciences,saidPatriciaO’Brien,executivedeanoftheUCLACollege.Asbiomedicinegrowsincreasinglycomplex,newacademicpartnershipsholdthekeytodiscovery;thisinstitutewillcreatenovelopportunitiesforresearchthatspansmanydisciplines.5 H: i2 N  s; `: Y& K
