! l7 R& d# {! uItcantakedecadestobringanewdrugtothemarketplace.Butbonemarrowtransplantshavebeenusedforyearstotreatahostofblooddisorders,includingleukemiaandsicklecelldisease.Theyhavebeenprovensafeandwouldrequirenogovernmentapprovalforuseasapossiblediabetestreatmentinhumans.

Diabetes,whichaffects150millionpeopleworldwide,occurswhenthepancreasdoesnotproduceenoughinsulinorwhencellsofthebodybecomeresistanttoinsulin.Asaresult,glucoseaccumulatesinthebloodstream,leadingtoseverecomplications,includingheartdisease,nervedamage,stroke,blindness,andkidneyfailure.

Labelingofthedonorcellsrevealedthatthenewcellgrowthhadcomefromcellsalreadywithinthepancreas,notfromtheinjectedcells.  l$ o5 [  m% y4 u1 N$ I$ m- c% g
“Wealmostdidn’tbelievetheresultsourselves,”saysBhatia.“Wehavehadtheresultsforafewyears,butheldbackpublishingthem.Butit’saconsistentrobusteffect.”

“Bonemarrowcellsonlygotothepancreasifit’sinjured,”saysBhatia.“Somethingattheinjurysitecausesthestemcellstohomeintothedamagedpancreas.Wehavenoideawhatthatcouldbe.”8 O2 m/ G) `) d
Otherstudieshaveshownrecentlythatbonemarrowstemcellscanbecomedifferentkindsofcellsinthebody,includingheart,liver,pancreas,andnerve.Butthesefindingshavebeencontroversial.Someexperimentssuggestthatthestemcellscanthemselvesbeturnedintodifferenttypesofcells,whileotherssuggestthatthechangeoccursbecausethecellsfusetoformhybridcells., o/ A6 \5 c/ S! ^
Bhatia’sstudyisdifferentbecauseitsuggeststhatthebonemarrowstemcellsdonotthemselvesbecomepancreascells.Instead,thecellssomehowstimulatenewgrowthincellsthatarealreadyinthepancreas.+ G" B2 i7 {: [0 ~- t- W6 T/ G
Justhowthisoccursisnotknown,butHabenerbelievesthatbonemarrowcellsaresecretingsomekindofsignalthattellsstemcellsinthepancreastogrow.
